چکیده

The isolation and identification of labeled amino acids from the acid hydrolysates of cells of Clostridium kluyveri grown in synthetic medium containing ethanol, acetate, and CO* as carbon sources, and with Cl402 or acetate-l-Cl4 as labeled substrate, have been reported previously (28). Alanine, serine, glycine, threonine, and aspartic acid so obtained have been degraded to determine the position of the Cl4 in each compound, and the results are reported in the present paper.

Production of medium-chain fatty acids and higher alcohols by a synthetic co-culture grown on carbon monoxide or syngas

BACKGROUND Synthesis gas, a mixture of CO, H2, and CO2, is a promising renewable feedstock for bio-based production of organic chemicals. Production of medium-chain fatty acids can be performed via chain elongation, utilizing acetate and ethanol as main substrates. Acetate and ethanol are main products of syngas fermentation by acetogens. Therefore, syngas can be indirectly used as a substrate ...

The production of fatty acids by a gram-negative coccus.

We have isolated from the rumen of the sheep an anaerobic Gram-negative coccus which ferments glucose, fructose, maltose, mannitol, sorbitol and DL-lactate with the production of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, acetate, propionate, n-butyrate, npentanoate and n-hexanoate (Elsden, Gilchrist, Lewis & Volcani, 1951). Since it is our intention to discuss the taxonomic position of this organism in a se...

Origin of the carbon skeletons of isoleucine and valine.

A mutant strain of Neurospora crassa, which requires isoleucine and valine for growth (l), was recently shown to accumulate precursors (Fig. 1) of both these amino acids (2, 3). Since isoleucine and threonine are known to be interconvertible in Neurospora (4), it seemed likely that the branched structure of isoleucine was formed by a coupling of a Cz compound such as acetate with a 4-carbon int...

Utilization of carbon dioxide in the synthesis of proteins by Escherichia coli. II.

The question of the mechanisms involved in protein synthesis is one of the most important problems in biology. One facet that has recently become amenable to experimental approach is the process of synthesis or accumulation of constituent amino acids. In an earlier paper (1) we have reported the utilization of Cl402 in protein synthesis by Escherichia coli and the identification of labeled aspa...
